Care needed when purchasing & installing a new heating system

Following high profile media reports on exhaust air source heat pumps, the Heating & Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) is calling for greater attention to the need for correct sizing, specifying, installation and commissioning of heating systems.

Chris Yates, Deputy Director of HHIC said “The need to insulate first and heat second is becoming increasingly important as consumers look to reduce their consumption of energy. Fully worked out heat loss calculations are the corner stone of ‘getting it right’ in terms of specifying a heating system. The installation should then be managed and properly commissioned. The latest version of the MCS heat pump installation standard, MCS 3005, provides excellent guidance in this area.  Householders also need to be educated about best way to use the new systems and installers should make sure that this is a key part of the handover. It’s a really important action that is often overlooked and can help to not only make sure the customer uses the system at its most efficient, but also minimises the call backs for the installer.”
