HHIC commits to review and help improve gas engineer’s knowledge on installing gas fires

HHIC holds regular meetings for members involved in the manufacture and installation of Gas Fires. The priority objective following the most recent meeting was to investigate and identify support and training on gas fire products for gas engineers.

Currently gas engineers working within the domestic sector commission and install central heating boilers but very few offer the consumer information and advice on the latest energy efficient gas fires.

Steve Sutton, Technical Manager at HHIC with responsibility for the gas products said “Most gas fires currently available are manufactured right here in the UK, so if we could find some way to help boost their sales not only would the industry benefit but consumers would have a more efficient product which used less energy.

One way this could be achieved would be to support the gas engineer – they are already visiting the consumer at home and providing advice on boilers so why not fires too? Fire manufacturers see the potential in this and are happy to accommodate visits to local manufacturing sites and outlets and to provide promotional materials and gas engineers themselves see the benefit as it provides them with additional income from the fire installation and annual service.”

HHIC believes that the number of gas engineers with the appropriate knowledge and experience to fit a gas fire is reducing and so work is currently underway with partners including EU Skills to address this issue.
