Put energy efficiency at the heart of policy for London- EUA advises London Mayoral candidates

Ahead of the elections for London Mayor, taking place on 5th May, the Energy and Utilities Alliance, EUA call on the successful candidate to put energy efficiency at the heart of policy for London. EUA recommends that the incoming candidate:

Extend the boiler scrappage scheme

The current scheme offers a financial incentive to replace a G rated boiler; EUA would like this to be extended to include all non-condensing boilers. This would enable greater levels of take up. An efficient boiler will reduce carbon emissions, and household energy bills.

Implement a robust and all-encompassing domestic energy efficiency scheme

Improved energy efficiency will reduce energy bills and help improve the health and wellbeing for London residents. Following the closure of the Green Deal scheme the installation of domestic energy efficiency measures has stalled. A whole house approach to energy efficiency is needed to help reduce carbon emissions in the capital.

Incentivise commercial natural gas vehicles

Natural Gas Vehicles, NGVs have lower emissions and lower operating costs than their diesel equivalents. Currently HGVs contribute nearly 75% of NOx emissions in local geographic areas, where the UK is exceeding annual targets. Natural gas as an alternative to diesel, in buses, LGVs and HGVs, can improve air quality by reducing NOx, CO2, and noise emissions, at no additional cost, and they can use the existing high-quality gas pipeline infrastructure. Current low carbon vehicle schemes haven't delivered as hoped, and NGVs offer a very real alternative.
