Weekly column by EUA's Chief Executive

The Autumn Statement, and its lead up, gave our industry some good news on a number of fronts. Firstly, the headline news about stamp duty. This should stimulate the number of property transactions that take place and the potential for new heating appliances being installed if new owners refurbish.

We also heard about plans to build more homes, including a new "Garden City" as well as direct government procurement of house building. Again, for our members this is good news. We are talking about connections to the grid, with all that this entails, meters, appliances and internal pipeworks. It is something we have been arguing for a while, is a key part of our Political Manifesto launched last month.

Beneath the headlines there were one or two nuggets. Encouragement to recruit apprenticeships with a reduction in National Insurance is a small, but welcome step to tackle the pending crisis we face with a shortage of skilled engineers. Something our colleagues at EU Skills have been flagging up for a while.

There was also some good news on Research and Development. The R&D tax credit scheme looks to be enhanced, and SMEs get an even higher rate. Given there is so much at stake in our industry around innovation, this is very welcome. In the longer term, the government seems to be increasing the amount invested in Research and Development. Whether this allows our sector access to funding remains to be seen, but given the challenges of dealing with the energy trilemma, future technologies could be our saviour - doing the research now could save us billions down the line.

Best wishes,

Mike Foster CE
